Description

The MC3500 Vacuum Tube Amplifier Mk II is a conservatively rated 350 Watt monoblock that takes its inspiration from the original 1968-71 MC3500 and incorporates everything we have learned about vacuum tube amplifier design since the 1960s. It has been upgraded to modern standards and with modern components to deliver an audio performance worthy of its predecessor and the legacy of their shared model number – all while adhering to the original design as much as possible. Like the original MC3500, the MC3500 Mk II uses our Unity Coupled Circuit output transformer, which allows the full 350 Watts to be safely delivered to virtually any speaker regardless if it has 2, 4 or 8-Ohm impedance.

Drawing from the revered original 1968-71 MC3500, the newly minted MC3500 Vacuum Tube Amplifier Mk II marries vintage inspiration with cutting-edge advancements in vacuum tube design. This 350 Watt monoblock embodies everything we've learned since the 1960s, upgraded to meet modern audio standards with contemporary components, ensuring a performance that not only matches but enhances the storied legacy of its name. Faithful to its roots, the MC3500 Mk II features our Unity Coupled Circuit output transformer, just like its predecessor, enabling the full 350 Watts to power speakers of any impedance—2, 4, or 8 Ohms—safeguarding its universal applicability and legendary McIntosh sound quality.

In 2019, during the 50th Anniversary celebration of Woodstock, McIntosh President Charlie Randall was inspired by the pivotal role the MC3500 Vacuum Tube Amplifiers played in that historic event. Recognizing its enduring significance, Charlie envisioned resurrecting this iconic model. Despite the formidable challenge of reviving a design first conceived over five decades ago, after two years of relentless development, this vision has been realized. We at Definitive are thrilled to share that McIntosh has triumphantly introduced the MC3500 Vacuum Tube Amplifier Mk II, blending historical reverence with contemporary innovation.

Sweep tubes, originally designed in the 1950s and 60s for TVs to power the cathode ray gun's traversal across the phosphor screen, were an innovative choice for McIntosh engineers when building the original MC3500 amplifier. This application showcased a creative repurposing of technology, harnessing the high power needs of television sweep tubes for audio amplification. The MC3500 Mk II continues this tradition by employing the high-power EL509S vacuum tubes, maintaining the essence of the MC3500’s output design. Moreover, mirroring its predecessor, the MC3500 Mk II incorporates an additional feedback loop that enhances the linearity and performance of the output tubes, ensuring that this modern iteration remains true to its legendary origins.
