A History of Audio Excellence

1973

The Beginning

Founded by Ivor Tiefenbrun in 1973, Linn was born from one man’s belief that he could vastly improve the sound quality of his music system at home, using precision-engineering and determined experimentation.

Their first-ever product, the modular and upgradeable Sondek LP12, revolutionized the hi-fi industry by demonstrating the huge musical difference a superbly engineered turntable could make to any hi-fi system.

1985

LK1 & LK2

In 1985, Linn expanded its product range with the release of the LK1 preamplifier and LK2 power amplifier, marking a significant milestone in the company’s growth. The LK1 was the first preamp to feature solid-state switching and microprocessor control, setting it apart from traditional models of the time. The LK2, a powerful power amplifier, followed soon after, and together they formed the backbone of Linn’s approach to building high-performance, integrated hi-fi systems. With these products, Linn became the first specialist company to offer a complete hi-fi system, reinforcing its commitment to delivering superior sound "from the microphone to the ear," and solidifying the brand’s leadership in the high-end audio industry.

1992

Linn Karik

In 1992, Linn introduced the Karik, their first-ever digital source product, marking a significant step into the world of digital audio. The Karik CD player, paired with Linn’s first digital-to-analog converter (DAC), the Numerik, was a game-changer for the CD format. At a time when many audiophiles still questioned the sound quality of CDs, the Karik and Numerik system proved that poor sound quality wasn’t inherent to CDs—it was the result of inferior CD players and digital technology.

1999

Linn Klimax Solo

The Klimax Solo, released in 1999, was the first Linn product to bear the prestigious Klimax name, symbolizing the pinnacle of Linn’s engineering and performance. The Klimax Solo was a mono amplifier, machined from solid aluminum, delivering unmatched power and precision. It was designed to provide audiophiles with the ultimate performance in a standalone amplifier, showcasing Linn’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of sound reproduction. The Klimax Solo was not only powerful but also refined, offering a level of transparency and control that made it a favorite among discerning listeners. To this day, the Klimax Solo remains an enduring part of Linn’s product lineup.

2007

Bringing Sound Home

In 2007, Linn introduced the Klimax DS, a revolutionary product that transformed the way music was consumed. Designed by Gilad Tiefenbrun and his team, the Klimax DS broke free from the limitations of physical media, enabling audiophiles to experience music in a completely new way. By streaming digital music directly from network sources, the Klimax DS brought studio-quality sound into homes worldwide, offering unprecedented clarity and accuracy in playback. This innovative product was one of the first to offer high-quality audio streaming without the need for traditional CD players or vinyl, signaling the future of high-fidelity music systems.

2015

Space Optimization

A built-in room-correction technology in every network music player—that neutralizes speaker-room interactions to uniquely optimize performance for every Linn DS and DSM owner, regardless of speaker type or placement.

2023
