1987

The Beginning

dCS (digital audio conversion systems) was founded in 1987 in Cambridge, UK, by a group of engineers driven by a shared vision to create audio equipment that would set new benchmarks in digital-to-analog conversion. Their goal was to challenge the limitations of existing technologies and develop products that would elevate the listening experience. They focused on combining cutting-edge digital audio technology with a deep understanding of the needs of audiophiles and recording professionals, setting the stage for dCS to become a global leader in high-end audio.

1990's

Creating Unparalleled Experiences

dCS pioneered the development of the world’s first high-resolution ADCs and DACs, creating products that have become indispensable in leading recording, mixing, and mastering studios. The breakthrough didn’t stop there—we introduced the world’s first high-resolution consumer DAC, Elgar, and were among the first to incorporate master clocks into audio systems, ensuring unparalleled timing and precision. Further cementing our legacy, dCS was commissioned to create custom, state-of-the-art equipment for the BBC, underscoring our unwavering commitment to audio excellence and innovation.

2000's

Launch of the dCS Scarlatti series

dCS made a decisive commitment to designing high-performance audio equipment for home use, beginning with the revolutionary p8i. Building on that success, they introduced the Scarlatti—their very first multi-box digital playback system that seamlessly integrates a CD transport, clock, and DAC, setting a new standard in digital fidelity. Not content with just these innovations, dCS also developed a custom interface to enhance audio quality through USB playback. Recognizing its potential, dCS licensed this breakthrough so that other companies and consumers could benefit from their relentless pursuit of superior sound performance.

2010's

Introducing Vivaldi

In 2012, dCS introduced the Vivaldi series, which once again raised the bar for digital audio. Combining state-of-the-art DAC technology with a modular design, the Vivaldi system allowed users to customize their setup to meet their specific needs and preferences. Each component in the Vivaldi series was designed to provide the highest level of musicality and precision, with advanced features like true 24-bit playback and ultra-low jitter. The Vivaldi series quickly became one of the most advanced and sought-after HiFi systems in the world, praised for its ability to deliver an unparalleled listening experience.

2019

Queen's Award for Enterprise

In 2019, dCS received the prestigious Queen's Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category, recognizing the company's groundbreaking work in digital playback and the advanced technologies behind the Vivaldi system. This honor placed dCS among an elite group of companies celebrated for excellence in British business. That same year, dCS also launched Mosaic, a custom streaming and playback platform designed to give dCS owners access to music from a wide range of streaming services, NAS drives, and external devices. Mosaic provided an intuitive mobile app that allowed users to control their entire dCS system with ease, offering true 24-bit sound and advanced control features.

2024

Radical Innovation

The Varèse, dCS's most advanced digital source, redefined expectations for musicality and precision, making its debut in the Pacific Northwest at Definitive and quickly gaining recognition for its revolutionary performance and innovative technologies. The Varèse made it's PNW Debut last October and has been a fan favorite ever since.
