Experience Films The Way Producers Intended With Kaleidescape
Netflix users collectively watched 1 billion hours of content per week in 2017, according to TechCrunch. Streaming services, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Google Play, Apple, and Hulu, give us instant access to our favorite TV shows and movies. They also offer exclusive content, accessible with a simple voice command like, “Alexa, play ‘Bird Box.’”
What’s more convenient than binge-watching your favorite shows and movies from the comfort of your own couch?
But there’s one major drawback to forgoing the movie theater — quality. Streamed services offer compressed versions of your favorite major-motion pictures. That means you’re missing out on the visual and audio quality that the production company spent $200 million to achieve.
Enter Kaleidescape, which offers top-of-the-line home theater systems and equipment designed for high-fidelity films.
Your Favorite Films in High-Fidelity
The biggest vantage point for Kaleidescape is the quality of its visual appearance and audio effects. It allows you to download a copy of a movie that is UHD Blu-ray or Blu-ray quality — or better. Of course, there is still some video compression. However, it’s to a similar degree as what you would find in disc format, which is much less than that of most streamed services. You do have to be a bit patient though, as you’re actually downloading each film before you watch it. Catch up on emails, scroll through your Facebook feed, and your movie will be ready before you know it. The quality is worth the (short) wait.
Kaleidescape’s Strato S movie player supports lossless multichannel audio and plays high dynamic range movies on televisions and projectors that can process open standard 10-bit HDMI 2.0a HDR. It’s displayed in full 4K Ultra HD at 60 frames per second. Simply put, that means you’ll get uninterrupted animation and a stunning visual display.
The Strato S can be used alone or coupled with the Terra movie server for greater storage. It’s the difference between 180 to 360 movies (made up of 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray quality movies, and DVD quality titles) for the Strato S as a standalone, compared to 600 to 1,200 movies for the Terra 40TB movie server.
Need a player for multiple rooms in the house? The Strato C is a more compact player than the Strato S, but it doesn’t have internal storage. As a result, it’s best used with the Terra movie server, which can support a number of Strato Cs and is capable of serving up to 10 simultaneous 4K HD playbacks.
Let’s Talk Libraries
After sound quality, the sheer number of titles available on Kaleidescape makes it a standout in the video-on-demand space.
Kaleidescape’s Movie Store, which is available directly from the home theater system, has about 10,000 titles, including new releases, like “A Star is Born” with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. That means you can belt out high notes in the comfort of your home, without anyone judging.
The Movie Store also pays homage to the pictures that set the standard for films today. On Kaleidescape, you can catch up on the classics, including “Gone with the Wind,” “The Sound of Music,” “Citizen Kane,” “Chicago,” and “Titanic.” Although Netflix is known for its new, original content, it’s missing milestone movies like these that have been such a big part of our filmmaking past — and future.
In addition to feature films, you’ll also find TV seasons, concerts, and documentaries in the catalog, all from the major motion picture studios and the most creative independents.
Like any library, it’s only as good as its organization — and this one does not disappoint.
Its library is eye-catching and easy to navigate, with cover art grouped into collections, such as:
Pre-order upcoming movies
4K HDR and 4K Ultra HD Movie Sets
Action Thrillers, Late-night Comedies, Feel-good Movies, Family Favorites
On the go? You can access Kaleidescape’s expansive catalog right from your iPhone with its mobile app.
There is a bit of bad news, however. If you’ve purchased movies from a streaming service, such as Netflix or Amazon Video, they won’t integrate with Kaleidescape’s home theater system. Built to be high-end players, the Stratos were designed for thosewho want to build an impressive movie collection, not just pop on the occasional flick.
Building Out Your Home Theater System
Have you dreamt of recreating the theater experience at home (minus the moviegoers who actively shout “Don’t go in there!” during peak moments)?
If so, then integration with an audiovisual control system, such as the Crestron or Control4, will be important. These systems allow you to control many of the aspects of your home — such as lighting, temperature, music, or security — from one remote or touchscreen.
That means you can set it to dim the lights as your movie begins or increase the temperature on a cold day — without ever leaving the comfort of your recliner. It stops short of buttering your popcorn — that’s on you.
In addition to controls, you’ll also need to think about speakers, screens and projectors. You might consider the Ultra-Short Throw 4K HDR Home Theater Projector from Sony, which has native 4K resolution (4096 x 2160), works on an 80- to 120- inch screen size, and is laser powered, with 2,500 lumens brightness. The resolution is incredibly lifelike — and is the same resolution defined by Digital Cinema Initiatives for cinema distribution, with pixels one quarter the size of those used by traditional Full HD 1080p projectors.
Or, if your space lends itself towards a TV – check out Sony’s 4K Ultra HD TVs, which have astounding detail and more pixels than full HD.
With the right equipment, your home theater system can rival your neighborhood cinema.
Stop by our Seattle or Bellevue showrooms to experience a range of movie systems first-hand. You’ll never watch movies at home the same way again.
